Composition Internet chatting It was late, and the night was dark and quiet. I was alone, in my bedroom with my eyes wide open, in front of the computer, hardly touching my keyboard, afraid to make any noise. I was chatting, with some people from the other part of the world. It was magic and I was so excited about my new discovery that I couldn’t think at anything else that what I was doing. I was reading the other’s reply and I was replying myself continuously. Nothing was interesting me anymore, I was revealing secrets, secrets of technology, secrets of other people who were (and probably still are) thousands of miles away. I met with people from all over the world. I chatted to people of different ages, from 12 to 60 years old. We were all amazed of what a computer can do. Some even couldn’t believe that there’s a real person on the other end of the line. At first I didn’t believe myself. When I sent for the first time a chat request I thought that I must wait a couple of minutes for the other part to acknowledge my request, but, astonishing it took only a few moments. I was really amazed by my new discovery and I really got caught by the chat lines that my chat partner was writing. He was asking about my name. Trembling, I sent him the response and I asked where he’s from… Arkansas - he told me –and u ?. I watched the words he wrote and I couldn’t find any meaning for that ‘u ?’ Suddenly I realized it was ‘you’ … both “you” and “u” are the same when pronounced. So I confirmed the question and replied: “Romania !“. “Oh- he said- it’s so rare to meet a chat partner from Romania, I’ve never spoke to someone from that part of the world until now”, and our discussion continued for about two hours, with me anxious to see what he’s knowing about Romania and, the real image of Romania from a real American citizen ! I was disappointed, all he knew was that our capital is “probably Budapest” (…) and that we were on the other side of the wall during the cold war. Some other time I happened to speak to someone from Canada who was about to give a license about the myths of the vampires. Poor girl, all she was asking me was “are there any vampires in Romania”. Anyway, I met special people on the net and I made friends. I set meeting hours with them online, and almost everyday (night) I was online, talking to them. It was a really fine experience for me and it will always remain in my memory. I realized that some things are happening on the other side of the world, even if our side is covered in darkness ! It was a great loss for me when I had to come to Bucharest. I lost my internet connection now, I can hardly speak to my “virtual” friends. I occasionally email them, and I’m glad to see that they didn’t forget me when I read my email ! 쥁`
